Proposal for Film Project Chris Helson and Sarah Jackets
Idea
To make permanent public work in Fallin that arises out of the process of making a film.
Fallin has at its heart a proud community, with a strong historical, social and religious identity. In the context of change and conflict this sense of identity has been and continues to be built into the landscape by the community and in consultation with the community.
In making we would look to understand and challenge this perceived sense of identity through an exploration of the spaces within Fallin and peoples interaction with those spaces.
Approach
Our approach to date, has been to speak with and invite individuals, associates and specific groups to engage in the work that we do, with varying degrees of success. Our premise to make a series of short films 'being shown round' by different individuals has proved most the successful. We have identified many social and physical parameters of reality within Fallin and have begun to build a wide network of contacts and gain a level of acknowledgment and trust that we wish to continue to build upon.
We will now focus on working with a number of individuals, taking the original 'being shown round' a stage further, and begin to explore a process of altering specific spaces.
We will work with the different individuals from within the community to construct temporary 'sets' in public spaces and to develop an understanding of movement through/ relationship to those spaces, using video. In constructing the 'sets' we will use a number of different approaches, for example making simple interventions, multiples or objects made for a specific scene.
The permanent outcome may be in the form of a multiple or it may be the tangible result of an event. Regardless of its form our aim is to work with people in the village to create something permanent that has significance and meaning to the people of Fallin. With regard to the film, we will work with the people involved in its production to find an appropriate form for its screening/ publication.
( please note where we refer to individuals, we do not rule out working with more than one person at a time, we may work for example with a couple, family, small group of friends etc. We do not intend to work with larger organised groups, unless invited to do so through working with an individual. Our intention is to work on a more intimate basis.)
