Fountains/ Landscape Proposal
Chris Helson and Sarah Jackets

Location.
The housing estates in Fallin are dissected by the main A905 Stirling to Grangemouth. The area of shops (The Square) in the centre of the village on the north side of the road is a primary focus for both the local community and the people who travel through Fallin. The Square is a difficult public space, with a confusing architectural structure that seems to have come about through individual utilitarian need over a long period of time, rather than through any single plan. For example, there is an electricity substation in the middle of the square and the bus shelter blocks the line of sight from the green on one side of the village to the area of ancient trees that provide a gateway to the other side of the village. Many of the buildings, particularly the library and an empty shop unit are in a poor state of repair. Access and parking are a major problem. The square is however a focal meeting point and is used at night by teenagers as a place to hang out. Our proposal is to develop the art work on a site directly opposite the square, (across the main road and a parallel estate road) on a grassed area surrounded by a tarmac footpath.

Idea.
Our idea is to create a series of water fountains. Our initial sketch design looks at remaking the space by using the fountains to create a meeting/ sanctuary space. We are interested in revealing/ understanding the place. Our intention is to create sense of place that would be in flux, as the fountains would be either on or off, depending of time of day, weather, etc.
Our proposal to create something alien, luxurious, looks to question and open up Fallin's sense of identity, through the use of elemental materials and structures.
